Out in London and in need of quality post-pub food? Our experts have selected their favourite after-hours cafes for you!

  ★ Voodoo Ray’s, Dalston

There’re three important factors for successful late-night food: be quick, delicious and fun. You want something tasty and you want it fast. And you don’t want anyone telling you to stop laughing so loudly. Voodoo Ray’s lives up to this because it serves pizza by the slice, a post-midnight pizza special and a solid drinks list – as well playing excellent music.

  ● voodoorays.com. Open Mon-Wed 5pm-midnight, Thurs 5pm-1am, Fri-Sat noon-3am, Sun noon-10pm

  Brittney Bean, co-founder of?Mother Clucker

  ★ Bob Bob Ricard, Soho

People love late-night dining at Bob Bob Ricard. It’s so elegant and pleasant; inside are beautiful booths (隔間) that are perfect for gatherings. The menu has mainly Russian dishes but there are British and French influences too. One of my favourite things is the “symbolic” steak.

  ● bobbobricard.com. Open daily, 12.30pm-3pm and 6pm-midnight; Fri and Sat 5.30pm-1am

Dan Doherty, executive chef at 24-hour restaurant the?Duck and Waffle

  ★ Beigel Bake, Brick Lane

It’s open 24 hours a day. It’s comforting to know you can go there any time and get something to eat. It’s usually exactly what you’re looking for at that time: hot salt beef, loads of mustard (芥末) and bread. You get an eclectic mix of people there.

  ● On Twitter. Open daily, 24 hours

  Lee Tiernan, chef-owner,?Black Axe Mangal

  ★ Ranoush Juice, Marylebone

The shawarma is great and the environment is really great. It’s filled with fruits for the juice and different Lebanese treats on the counter. Customers will always get a shawarma wrap, as it comes with extra garlic and great sauces.

To the people who came to Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn, he had no name. To them, he was “the ice cream man.” He was just two hands and a smile handing back ice cream from the van window. To me, he was my older brother, Andrew.

Once, he worked on Wall Street. Now he spent his days selling ice cream to an endless line of kids, moms and dads in bathing suits, perhaps daydreaming of a beach faraway.

All day long, while he sold bags of potato chips, cans of soda, and all types of ice cream, he would do this sort of robotic motion — turn to the right — stoop down, hand the item out the window and collect the money.

His drinking days were over now. They neared their end one night after he took a severe beating when someone followed him home and robbed him when he was drunk. Left in the wake of too many nights of heavy drinking were memories of pain and misery. He was determined he would never take another drink again.

One day years later, I went to look for him. I slipped into the high driver’s seat and sat quietly watching him work. Occasionally, he would ask me to toss him a diet root beer or a bag of chips, all the time hunched over as he worked the long line.

He died in March 1999. He had served in the Army for two years in Europe in the 1950s. They gave him a soldier’s funeral with a folded flag.

On that afternoon, as I watched him sell ice cream from a van window , he taught me something about living this life that we all pass through too quickly. It was a lesson about trying to live it with grace and dignity and style, no matter what.

  25. Where was my brother likely to sell the ice cream?

  On a train.

  B. by a swimming pool.

  C. On Wall Street.

  D. In a supermarket.

Which of the following can best describe my brother’s job?

  C. dull and annoying

  D. hard but interesting

What does the underlined word “that”in paragraph 4 refer to?

  the robbers

  B. the painful memories

  C. The consumers

  D. the drinking days

What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

  To remember his brother.

  To advertise the ice cream.

  To share a life lesson.

To show his love for the ice cream.

Visiting Day?is a similarly personal story for its author, Jacqueline Woodson, and its illustrator(插圖畫家), James E. Ransome. In its opening pages, a girl wakes up early and joyfully hopes the monthly trip she and her grandmother will take to see her father in prison. “And maybe Daddy is already up,” she tells us, “brushing his teeth, combing his hair back, saying, ‘Yeah, that pretty little girl of mine is coming today.” We never learn what crime the girl’s father has been guilty of.

Ransome’s illustrations for?Visiting Day are filled with warm, bright colors, and describes the prison’s visiting room as a space filled with men laughing and embracing their children. These are images that can help children see prisons as places where love can survive, but there are some aspects of incarceration that even the brightest colors cannot change.

The book ends, as it must, with the girl leaving the prison with her grandmother, and leaving her father behind. But the two remain focused on the future, and on their knowledge that they are still a family. “Grandma says all it takes is time,” the girl tells us, “and while we’re holding out waiting for Daddy to come home we can count our blessings and love each other up .”

The struggle of growing up with a parent in prison is a story children’s literature is just beginning to tell. Writing of his work on?Visiting Day,illustrator James E. Ransome remarked that he “questioned whether or not we should clarify such a controversial issue.”?Visiting Day?was published in 2002, and it’s difficult to say whether, in the decade, Americans have grow more willing to talk about the needless suffering mass incarceration(監(jiān)禁) brings down both prisoners and their families—or whether America’s prison population has simply grown so astonishing that we finally recognize we cannot put off this conversation any longer.

  28. What can we learn about Visiting Day??

The father is guilty of murder.

It is about a wonderful trip to visit a prison.

It is based merely on its author’s experience.

The girl hasn’t seen her father for about a month.

  29. What is the visiting room in the prison like according to James E. Ransome?

  Hard to change

  With colorful walls

  In a joyful atmosphere

  full of disappointed men

  30. What can we learn about the story?

The father was released from prison.

The girl was hopeful about their future.

The girl struggled with pain for her family.

The grandmother left the prison heartbroken.

  31. what can be inferred about the book Visiting Day ?

  It involves a questioned issue.

It has growing very popular among Americans.

Its publication reduces America’s prison population.

Many American authors have covered this kind of story.

There is a Website called the “World Database of Happiness”. It combines and analyzes the results of hundreds of surveys from around the world that have been conducted on life satisfaction. Most of the findings are predictable, but a few are surprising.

The database makes it clear that there is not a strong connection between material wealth and general satisfaction. It is a cliche to say that money can’t buy happiness, but the old saying seems to be supported by research. Many people still believe that gaining riches will be the answer to all their problems, yet they are probably mistaken.

Studies have been carried out on people who got sudden wealth, such as lottery winners. In most cases, after the initial joy had worn off, people were not left with a sense of lasting happiness. In fact, they tended to go back to the way they felt before they became rich.

If material wealth does not bring happiness, then what does? Perhaps happiness has something to do with where you live. The authorities at the World Database on Happiness have surveyed levels of happiness in different countries. Obviously, people in America, Canada, and Singapore are very happy; people living in India and Russia, not surprisingly, are not happy.

Other surveys consistently point to the importance of relationships. Family relationships in particular seem to be the key to long-term happiness. The website suggests that falling in love and having children are two of the situations that bring the greatest happiness.

Nowadays people look to technology as another source of satisfaction. People increasingly spend more time alone watching TV or surfing the Internet rather than spending time with family. Can technology truly make people happy? It is too difficult to tell, but one thing is sure: If the website’s research is right, time spent with your family is a better investment than time spent making money.

  32. The Website World Database of Happiness is designed to ______ .

  A. share stories of happiness

  B. find out the reason for happiness

  C. conduct surveys around the world

  D. tell interviewees how to be happy

  33. What does the word cliche (Para.2) mean?

  A. Traditional custom.

  B. Proved theory.

  C. Famous report.

  D. Popular belief.

  34. Who is the happiest according to the passage?

  A. An unhappy man who has won a lottery in Singapore.

  B. A student who has three high-income part-time jobs in India.

  C. A mother who stays with her family everyday in America.

  D. A Russian falling in love with a soulmate recently.

  35. What seems to be the author’s advice about happiness?

  A. Levels of happiness vary from country to country.

  B. Making money is not the only way to happiness.

  C. It is uncertain whether technology make people happy.

  D. A good family relationship is the key to lasting happiness.

  第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

  根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

There are so many things we do in our daily life that have become a “habit”. 36 How you answer the phone is a habit. The way you sit in the car when you drive is a habit. Have you ever tried to change the way you do something, after you’ve done it in a certain way for so long. It’s not very easy to do. The minute your mind drifts to something else, you go right back to the old way of doing things. 37.________ It’s a way of doing things that has become routine or commonplace. To change an existing habit or form a new one can be tedious task.

Let’s pick something fairly easy to start with, like spending 15 minutes in the morning reading the Bible. If you want to turn something into a habit that you do every day, you have to WANT to do it. 38.________ Make a firm decision to do this on a daily basis.

Imprint it in your mind. Write several notes to yourself and put them in places where you will see them. By the alarm clock, on the bathroom mirror, on the refrigerator door, in your briefcase, and under your car keys are good places to start.

After the newness wears off, then you will have to remind yourself, “Hey, I forgot to…” Keep using the notes if you have to. 39.________ Some people say it will take over a month to solidify it and make it something you will do without having to think about it. I tend to agree with the last statement. Two to three weeks will help you to remember, but thirty days or more will make it a part of your everyday routine. 40.________ A. What is a “habit” anyway?

  B. Is doing things in an old way good?

  C. Brushing your teeth is a habit.

  D. Forming a bad habit is easy.

  E. It takes 16 to 21 times of repeating a task to make it a habit.

  F. If you don’t, you will find a way to do everything but that.

  G. That’s something you won’t necessarily have to think about before you do it—habit.
